Indian Recipe- Chola Poori
Chola Poori, also known as Kolkata Chola Poori, Masala Poori or Masala Puri, is an Indian recipe for fried bread. It’s made with chickpea flour and spices, then topped with potato curry and tamarind date chutney. (Recipe from Manjula’s Kitchen .)
What Is Chola Poori?
Traditionally, pooris are deep fried, which obviously isn’t practical for those trying to avoid fat and/or cholesterol. The solution? Bake it instead! Take a look at Indian cooking expert Geeta Sidhu’s recipe for Chola Poori.
Step 1: Curd Preparation
Take 3 cups of hung curd in a bowl. Add 1 tbsp mint coriander chutney, 1⁄2 tsp dry mango powder, 1⁄4 tsp chaat masala, 1 chopped green chillies and salt to taste. Mix well. Keep it aside for 30 minutes to one hour so that it can get sourness as we want (cholas will be very soft otherwise). Spread them on plate.
Step 2: Dough Preparation
Making dough is a bit more time consuming than making pooris. It requires a lot of resting, waiting and so on. While we make chola pooris we need to prepare dough that too with kneading, rolling and finally frying them. Therefore, if you want to prepare for dinner or lunch for your family just remember one thing – make less quantity of dough otherwise by next day your leftover bread will be all gone in seconds when you try to serve it again as pooris! In these conditions only frying technique comes as an alternative but let’s see how we can reduce steps required for making chola pooris, shall we? As I mentioned before all you need is 30 minutes at most excluding resting periods, so let’s see how we can do that
Step 3: Deep Frying The Balls
Deep fry all eight chola pooris until they are light brown in color. Drain excess oil using a strainer or paper towels. You can sprinkle some chaat masala on it to add flavor and garnish it with sliced onions, tomato, green chili or whatever you like. Enjoy your hot and spicy chola poori with mango chutney, sweet tamarind chutney or mint coriander chutney. Serve them as a snack for kids during playtime. You could even pack them for your children’s lunch box or take them along while traveling by car or train. #SnackTime !!!
Step 4: Garnishing And Serving
Ready to eat! Top with onions, tomatoes, or any other garnish you’d like. It goes well with both yogurt and hot sauce. Chola poori is traditionally served with curry sauce (or gravy) and eaten during breakfast in India. And that is how to make chola poori!
