How to Prepare a Rainbow Cake

How to Prepare a Rainbow Cake

Preparing rainbow cake at home can be complicated and intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of steps involved in making the rainbow cake from scratch, but once you get started on the recipe, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to prepare. In this guide, you’ll learn how to make a rainbow cake, step by step and discover how to prepare this unique dessert treat yourself!

What ingredients are needed?

To make a rainbow cake, you'll need to begin with some batter. For yellow cake, you'll need about 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 3 large eggs. Mix these ingredients together in one bowl until they're smooth and well combined. Add two tablespoons of vegetable oil and two teaspoons vanilla extract and mix them into the batter thoroughly using an electric mixer. Once that's done, it's time for food coloring! You'll want eight drops of yellow food coloring (or liquid yellow food dye), five drops of red food coloring (or liquid red food dye) and four drops of blue (or liquid blue food dye). These will add color and flavor to your cake!

What tools do you need?

The first thing you'll need is your trusty whisk. You might not think of it as a tool, but you won't be able to make rainbow cake without one. Before getting started, make sure that your kitchen's in order. Your rainbow cake isn't going to bake itself and there are plenty of other tools at your disposal—everything from bowls and spoons to wire racks and cooling racks. Think about what else you'll need for baking, such as an oven or microwave, and have everything ready so you can get straight down to business once it's time for step 2.

The first step - color mixing

The first step towards baking a rainbow cake is mixing all of your ingredients. In order to successfully bake rainbow cake, you need red, orange, yellow, green and blue liquid food coloring. As you probably know food coloring comes in packets which means that it’s impossible to make bright colors; therefore it’s crucial that you follow these instructions carefully if you want your cake to look perfect. You might be surprised how easy it is for these simple steps to lead into mistakes. After mixing all of your liquids with one another mix your dry ingredients with each other as well and put them aside for later use.

The second step - mixing the batter

While it may sound tedious, now is also a good time to prepare all of your different colors of batter. It’s much easier to mix up five or six bowls than it is one big bowl that you have to worry about over-mixing. I would also recommend getting each bowl lined with parchment paper before pouring in any batter so it’s easier (and less messy) to transfer into your cake pans later on. Again, if you're not using silicone pans, spray them well with nonstick cooking spray as well. This will make sure there's absolutely no sticking once it comes time for unmolding your cakes later on in assembly. Be careful - spraying too close to heat can cause small fires! Also be sure and pour in equal amounts of each color!

Pouring into pans and cooking

You'll want to grease each pan before you pour in your batter. This helps keep it from sticking to the pan and ensures that it cooks evenly. To ensure an even bake, be sure not to overcrowd your pans when cooking your cake. You also don't need any special materials; nonstick baking sheets will do just fine. While you're waiting for your cakes to cook, go ahead and frost them with whatever colorful confection strikes your fancy. From buttercream or whipped cream on top of chocolate cupcakes to dulce de leche or ganache spread over vanilla, there are plenty of options available—and all will make your rainbow cake more spectacular than ever! Once you've enjoyed every last crumb of it, take a picture for posterity's sake!

Decorating your rainbow cake

While your cake is cooling, you can start work on your rainbow frosting. To get started, divide your buttercream into six bowls and color each one with food coloring. Start by adding about four drops of food coloring to one bowl of frosting, then slowly add three more drops until you have a light tint that you like. Next, repeat with another bowl of frosting—this time using more drops than last time. Continue adding and removing small amounts of food coloring until all six bowls are colored and tinted how you want them. You’ll need to use more or less dye depending on how light or dark you want your final colors. (Rainbow cake image)
