How to Make Singapore Noodles at Home

How to Make Singapore Noodles at Home

Singapore noodles are commonly found in Asian restaurants, especially those located in Singapore, but many people aren’t sure how to make them themselves. In this article, you’ll learn the three simple steps to making Singapore noodles at home, so you can enjoy Singapore noodles any time!

Singapore Noodles - What are they?
While there are a lot of theories on where Singapore noodles originated, most agree that it all started in 1950s Singapore. During that time, street food vendors sold laksas and other noodle dishes for very cheap. If you wanted to make these dishes at home but didn’t have access to fresh ingredients (or simply wanted to save some money), you would take dried laksas from street vendors and use them as a base for your own version of what came to be known as Singapore noodles. These days, preparing Singapore noodles isn’t much different from cooking regular egg-based lo mein or ramen; all you need is garlic, some spices and soy sauce.

How to make Singaporean style fried noodle
Add in your diced pork belly and fried it until both sides are browned. Once cooked, set aside. Heat up your frying pan again and add in garlic with some chili flakes. Stir them around for about 30 seconds until fragrant, then push everything to one side of your frying pan.

Traditional Comfort Food
Singapore noodles is one of those dishes that evokes memories of a home away from home. It’s simple, easy and requires few ingredients, yet it has a flavor that’s big on comfort. Here are three ways you can prepare Singapore noodles at home.

Ingredients for cooking Singaporean style fried noodle
1/4 cup peanut oil 2 Tablespoons oyster sauce 1 Tablespoon soy sauce 1 teaspoon sesame oil 4 large eggs, beaten 8 ounces lean pork cut into thin strips 3 small dried chilies, cut into thin slivers (or if you can’t find dried chili, use sweet red pepper) 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pinch of salt 1⁄2 head small cabbage (1 pound), washed and cut into very thin slices. 8 oz.

Cooking preparation steps
Add sufficient oil into a pan and put it on high heat. Add all vegetables, sausages, fish cakes, tofu puffs and sliced meat into wok or pan and stir-fry until they are almost cooked. Add noodles into a large pot of boiling water with 1-2 tablespoons of salt added. Cook noodles for approximately 3 minutes or until soft yet firm to bite. Remove noodles from water with slotted spoon and set aside in plate until other ingredients are ready for mixing.

Ways to Serve Singaporean Style Fried Noodle
There are several ways that you can serve Singaporean style fried noodles, but my favorite is with some pickled cucumbers and a healthy serving of finely chopped cilantro. The flavors blend together to create an amazing noodle dish. If you are looking for something a little more delicious then you can also serve your noodles with a light drizzle of sweet chili sauce over top of them, which brings out all of the other flavors in your dish even more. You can also try adding in shrimp and chicken if you would like or any other veggies that you would like. This is a great way to add flavor while sticking to your traditional recipe.

Singapore Noodles

Singapore noodles are one of the most popular street foods in China. If you’re craving something that’s easy to make and scrumptious to eat, you’ll love this dish! It only takes a few minutes to prepare and it’s packed with umami flavors you won’t want to miss out on.

Cooking Time
3 minutes preparation and 10 minutes cooking. Ingredients: 320 gm of cooked rice noodles 3 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tsp light soy sauce a handful of Chinese chives 2 small cooked prawns (shells removed) 1⁄2 clove garlic, minced 1 spring onion, finely chopped 1⁄2 can of kidney beans (rinse in warm water), sliced in half Method: Mix all ingredients together. Serve with a light salad and peanuts on top. Enjoy! : ) Note: Sesame oil gives it a nutty aroma and taste, so for those who don’t like it can change to peanut oil or leave out altogether.

Side Dishes
One reason people go for Singapore noodles is that they come with a variety of side dishes. The side dishes typically consist of tofu, broccoli, and mushrooms stir-fried in oyster sauce and soy sauce. You can also choose to add other ingredients such as baby corn or carrots, if you prefer. Served on top of these ingredients are rice noodles mixed with cut chicken strips, egg rolls, fish balls, and shrimp balls.

Serving Suggestions
These noodles are perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner and really can be served at any time of day. For a great introduction to Singapore-style noodles, stir-fry them with shrimp, chicken or pork and serve with a chilled beverage. If you have leftover curry powder on hand (and who doesn't?), sprinkle some on top of your dish before serving. These delicious noodles also make a great addition to any Asian-themed meal. Adding them to your menu is as easy as adding coconut milk and curry powder!
